In this article, we would like to tell you more about the German town: Vreden.

The village of Vreden in Germany

The town of Vreden is located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and on the border with Overijssel and Gelderland. So it is really just around the corner!

Vreden is located on the river Berkel and it has about 23,000 inhabitants. Do you like museums, hiking or visiting events? You wouldn't know it, but Vreden is a small town where there is still a lot of fun to see, do and experience. Are you curious? We've listed everything for you below.

A small cultural town

Are you a true lover of culture and do you like to visit museums? Then that's a good reason to pay Vreden a visit. In this town you will find interesting museums, such as the:

- Scherenschnittmuseum Vreden (a small museum where wonderful clipping art is exhibited, located in an old town hall. You can also eat here and the entrance is free);
- kult - Kultur und lebendige Tradition (a museum that combines art and local history in a fascinating exhibition);
- Bauernhausmuseum Vreden Historische westmünsterländische Hofanlage (various farms that show you how the generations before us lived).

A historical market

Every year in the month of May, Vreden hosts not just any market, but a historical one. It is actually better to call it a medieval feast, especially for young and old. Artists from all over Germany flock to this small town to entertain tourists and residents with great performances.

What kind of artists should you think of? For example musicians, bards, fire-eaters, market masters, and knights riding through Vreden on horseback. In short: are you staying at Hofparken around this time or are you still looking for a place to stay and want to come home with a special story? If so, you should visit this magical event in Vreden.

Not just cultural, but culinary experiences as well

End the day with a delicious snack and drink? In Vreden you will find several restaurants where you will be treated to culinary delights. Fancy a pizza, prefer a hamburger or, under the guise of 'since we're here', a German schnitzel? This town may be small, but the range of culinary delights can't be called that. Small and large events

In addition to the annual Medieval Festival, the town center also hosts a monthly (children's) flea market. Here you can browse around to your heart's content as there are more than 40 stalls, but it doesn't stop there.

Because in August, a food truck festival is organized and in September you have the chance to visit a huge fairground. This fair does attract more than 100,000 visitors from all over the region, including the Netherlands. Here you can enjoy fast rides and breathtaking flights.

A beautiful nature reserve

The Achterhoek region is great for cycling, of course, but you will also feast your eyes during a hike or bike ride in the area around Vreden. This area offers as many as 4500 kilometers of cycling and hiking trails. These cross the Münsterland and lead you to beautiful pieces and special natural areas. Plan your own route online or put together your own route using the junction system (Vreden is located at junctions 8 and 9).

We would like to highlight a special route, the flamingo route. This route leads you along breathtaking nature reserves that lie between Enschede and Borken. It is a special route with many highlights, but the highlight is found in the Zwillbrocker Venn. In this area, you will find the northernmost flamingo breeding colony in Europe. In the months of March to June, you will have the chance to observe these fascinating flamingos.

In short: there are great places for cycling and hiking all around this town. Rent a bike from Hofparken or bring one yourself and discover the unspoiled nature of Münsterland.
