Hiking routes around Winterswijk
Winterswijk is a beautiful town located in the east of the Netherlands and, to be exact, 5.7 kilometers driving distance from Hofparken Wiltershaar. Known for its beautiful natural areas, it is a popular destination for hikers.
There are many hiking routes around Winterswijk, varying in length and difficulty. We would like to recommend some of our favorite hiking routes around Winterswijk. Of course, there are routes for recreational hikers and for real hiking fanatics!
The Korenburgerveen hike: discover the unique raised bog area
The first hiking route around Winterswijk that we recommend is the Korenburgerveen hiking route. This area is a high bog area and the largest connected nature reserve in the Netherlands.
The route is about 4.5 kilometers long and takes you through a characteristic swamp area. Make sure to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature along the way.
Here you will find various special birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. Even rare butterflies, which you won't find anywhere else in other parts of the Netherlands!
ps. the route starts at the parking lot 't Rommelgebergte on the Arrasveldweg (is a 15-minute drive from Hofparken Wiltershaar).
Wooldse Veen: at the highest point of Winterswijk
A somewhat more challenging hiking route is the Wooldse Veen hiking route. This particular route is about 3 kilometers long and takes you back to the starting point. Pay attention as you move through the Wooldse Veen via a challenging and unique plank path!

The Wooldse Veen lies on a slope, at the highest point in Winterswijk. This beautiful high moorland area borders the German-Dutch border of Winterswijk. The area is characterized by peat pits and peat dikes: remnants of the former excavations, where people used the peat for turf after drying out.
Address: The parking lot of Natuurmonumenten and entrance Wooldse Veen can be found at the Kuipersweg, near the junction Lammersweg-Kuipersweg.
If you prefer to walk a similar route but a bit longer, you can do so in the Korenburger Veen using the 'Schaddenpad'. This is 11 km long and the route is breathtakingly beautiful.
The Old Earth: admire the special rock formations
The one last hiking route we would like to recommend to you is also a special one, namely: the Old Earth Hiking Route. This route is about 9 kilometers long. Discover the area between Winterswijk and the German border and end with a treat: the former quarry!
A route that also takes you along a few other walking routes around Winterswijk! Among others, you walk along Willinkbeek, the quarry, and Forest Area Willinks Weust.
If we had to point out a highlight it would be the quarry! A rough, rugged, but oh-so-beautiful area that originated from many centuries of limestone quarrying. The rock walls are not hundreds, but millions of years old. Many special fossils have also been found in recent decades.
Tip: with a guide, it is possible to take a walk through the quarry.
Does this kind of hiking route around Winterswijk make your hiking heart beat faster? The starting points of this route are both at Hofparken Wiltershaar (Vosseveldseweg 9) and at SP09 Emma at Raetmansweg 10. So it's perfect to combine with an overnight stay!
Explore the best-kept secret: Winterswijk National Landscape
Finally, a hiking route, as promised, for the real hiking fanatic! Of all the hiking routes around Winterswijk, this is a solid one!
The route leads you through an area of 22,000 hectares. Walk through nature reserves, village centers, farmlands, and much more!
At the end of the day, you will have completed a walk of no less than 20 kilometers. The route has three starting points and can even be extended with a round of Korenburgerveen (see above).
City Brewery de Borghman is the starting point that we would personally recommend to you (Het Zand 25, Bredevoort). This is a 15-minute drive away from Hofparken Wiltershaar.

A tip for hiking in the Winterswijk area is to consider the season. For example, in winter it can be slippery on the hiking trails and there might even be snow.
In summer it can be hot, so it is extra important to bring enough water. In addition, in some natural areas, it is not allowed to walk outside the trails. So keep this in mind!
